A look back, to the recent past, to march together with those who fought and defended a human right, vital and fundamental, today increasingly denied and debased in its ethical meaning: the right to work and its dignity. Voices of struggle, interviews, reflections vibrate in the fluctuating magma of archive photos, reminding us that history is us. An instructive journey, among sacrifices and strikes, solidarity and battles, workers and trade unions, against inequalities and injustices: words and concepts not to be lost, especially today, in the precarious times of the gig economy.
The new film by Sardinian director Peter Marcias is a careful acknowledgement of workers’ claims during the 20th century in Italy, choosing Sardinia as the central location for this investigation.
Uomini in marcia
also deals with issues such as the right to study and environmental calamities due to the devastating industrial pollution. Among the testimonies, two great filmmakers stand out who have investigated labour by putting it at the forefront of so many of their works: the British director Ken Loach and the French director Laurent Cantet (who died on April 25, 2024 at the age of 63).
Peter Marcias (Oristano, Italy, 1977) launched his career in cinema with short films. He made his debut feature in 2008 with Un attimo sospesi starring Paolo Bonacelli, Nino Frassica and Ana Caterina Morariu. The subsequent, I bambini della sua vita, won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for Piera Degli Esposti. In 2012, Dimmi che destino avrò was presented at the Turin Film Festival, while La nostra quarantena with Francesca Neri was a special event at the Pesaro International Film Festival and a finalist at the Nastri d’argento. Marcias has also directed documentaries, including Ma la Spagna non era cattolica? and Silenzi e parole, both dealing with Lgbtqia+ issues. Nilde Iotti, il tempo delle donne (Nilde Iotti, the time of women), starring Paola Cortellesi, was selected for the Authors Days of the 77th Venice Film Festival. Marcias’ works show a strong interest in a cinema linked to artistic, social and political issues.
