Ana, a literature teacher, is accused by the father of her student Viktor of misconduct, due to a lesson on the life and work of Arthur Rimbaud. This accusation is made specifically because she had assigned the class to see Agnieszka Holland’s movie, Poets from Hell, in order to explore the subject. Since the main theme of the film is homosexuality, a crusade is organised against the teacher, who starts a fight to justify herself, causing an absurd chain of reactions. The scandal that follows generates unpredictable consequences that affect both her life and Viktor’s. The case ends up at the school court and the air becomes increasingly unbreathable for Ana and the boy. Without Air focuses on many issues such as acceptance of the other, being a teacher in a European country, Hungary, questioning freedom of speech and expression, the nature of power, homophobia, and oppression.

Katalin Moldovai (Dés, Romania, 1982) is a director and screenwriter. After attending the Hungarian Sapientia University of Transylvania in Cluj-Napoca, graduating in Cinema, Photography and Media in 2013, she continued her studies in Hungary at the Budapest Metropolitan University with a master’s degree in Television and Film direction. Without Air is her first fiction feature film.
