Jamal, the son of two Syrian doctors, is a 34-year-old psychiatrist whom French director Nicolas Peduzzi chose as the protagonist of his documentary On the Edge (État limite). The doctor works in the public hospital of Beaujon located in the Paris suburb of Clichy. The hospital is one of the many casualties of budget cuts in the French health system, and was so, even before the new cuts were announced. For these reasons, the facility employs only one psychiatrist, who is forced to deal with a constant state of emergency (in fact, in a ?borderline state?, always ?on the edge?). This unfair working condition does not prevent him from helping the many patients, men and women, who come to his ward for a variety of reasons: trauma, aggression, suicide attempts, panic attacks? For Jamal, the dialogue to be established with the patients is crucial. At the same time, he has to deal with his colleagues between cases to be solved, always using humanity and respect. This fast-paced film conveys empathy and asks questions about being a psychiatrist in the year when the centenary of Franco Basaglia’s birth is celebrated. Nicolas Peduzzi (Paris, France, 1982) grew up in Italy where he studied theatre and cinema. Then he moved to the States to attend Susan Batson?s classes. After having produced and directed short films, he focused on documentaries and debuted in feature films production in 2017 with his movie Southern Belle. This film was followed by Ghost Song , premiered in 2021 at the ACID section of the Cannes Film Festival. His third feature, On the Edge , won Special mention of the Jury at the Copenhagen CPH: DOX Festival. Apart from being a director, Peduzzi is also an actor.
